Rwanda has achieved remarkable success in malaria control in recent years due to the aggressive scaling up of preventive and curative interventions through both the public and private sectors. With the support of the Global Fund, more than 3 millions of LLINs were distributed since 2005, through massive integrated immunization campaigns and antenatal care services. In 2007, 60% of children <5 and pregnant women had slept under a LLINs compared to 16% in 2005. In October, 2006, Rwanda converted 100% of health facilities to the world’s most effective new ACT. Since then, Rwanda has extended the children’s treatment drug to community health workers in 21 of 30 Districts, and to 80% of private pharmacies. By making this most effective drug available through public, private and community channels, Rwanda is certain that the majority of childhood malaria cases are treated with the most effective treatment drug. With funds from the US President’s Malaria Initiative, Rwanda targeted communities in 5 districts (out of 30) with household spraying between 2007 and 2009. In 2007, Rwanda sprayed 91% of homes. In 2009, Rwanda achieved nearly 97% household coverage by using local leaders to mobilize households, and community health workers to conduct the spray campaign. However, this is only part of the story. Equally important was the strong leadership shown by the government, the heath system strengthening and integration of malaria control activities into existing system, coordinated international donor support from the GFATM, PMI/USAID, the Belgian Cooperation and others. His Excellency the Rwandan Ambassador in the USA and myself, will be presenting on the World Malaria Day’ congressional events on Capitol Hill the profile of Rwanda success story and explain its global significance as we move towards a period of sustained malaria elimination.Dr Corine Karema |
