Rwanda has achieved remarkable success in malaria control in recent years due to the aggressive scaling up of preventive and curative interventions through both the public and private sectors. With the support of the Global Fund, more than 3 millions of LLINs were distributed since 2005, through massive integrated immunization campaigns and antenatal care services.
In 2007, 60% of children <5 and pregnant women had slept under a LLINs compared to 16% in 2005. In October, 2006, Rwanda converted 100% of health facilities to the world’s most effective new ACT. Since then, Rwanda has extended the children’s treatment drug to community health workers in 21 of 30 Districts, and to 80% of private pharmacies. By making this most effective drug available through public, private and community channels, Rwanda is certain that the majority of childhood malaria cases are treated with the most effective treatment drug.
